The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) appeared to be in a strong position, leading in 29 out of 32 assembly seats in Sikkim, according to early trends from the Election Commission of India on Sunday.

Officials began counting votes at 6 am amid tight security. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, an SKM candidate, is leading by around 4,830 votes over his nearest Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) rival Som Nath Poudyal in Rhenock. Additionally, Tamang is ahead by 2,052 votes in Soreng Chakung over SDF's A D Subba.

Former Chief Minister and SDF supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling is trailing behind SKM's Raju Basnet by 546 votes in Namcheybung. In Poklok Kamrang, Chamling is trailing behind SKM's Bhoj Raj Rai by 1,057 votes. Former India Football captain and SDF candidate Bhaichung Bhutia is also trailing by 2,872 votes in Barfung against SKM's Riksal Dorjee Bhutia. Sikkim BJP unit president Dilli Ram Thapa is trailing behind SKM's Kala Rai by 1,543 votes in Upper Burtuk.
