BJP Faces Crushing Defeat in Sikkim Assembly Elections

The BJP failed to secure any of the 31 assembly seats it contested in Sikkim, where it previously had 12 members in the outgoing House. In contrast, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) won 31 out of 32 seats. Key BJP leaders, including Sikkim BJP president Dilli Ram Thapa, lost their constituencies.

The BJP faced a disheartening defeat in the recently concluded Sikkim assembly elections, failing to secure a single seat out of the 31 it contested. Previously holding 12 seats in the outgoing assembly, this loss signifies a substantial setback for the party.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) swept the polls, winning 31 out of 32 seats. The SKM managed to secure 58.38% of the vote share, making a resounding return to power. In stark contrast, the BJP managed to gain only 5.18% of the votes.

Key figures like Sikkim BJP president Dilli Ram Thapa were among the prominent losers. Thapa, a sitting MLA and former minister, lost to SKM's Kala Rai by 2,968 votes in the Upper Burtuk constituency. Compounding BJP's woes, five of its 12 MLAs deserted the party ahead of the elections.
