Imran Khan Acquitted in Vandalism Cases

In a significant legal victory, a Pakistani court on Monday acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and other senior leaders of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in two cases tied to vandalism during an anti-government march in 2022. The verdict marks a notable moment in Khan's prolonged legal battles.

The 71-year-old PTI founder has been behind bars since August last year, grappling with nearly 200 cases filed against him since his removal from the premiership in April 2022. The district and sessions court in Islamabad exonerated Khan, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, ex-Communication Minister Murad Saeed, among others, in these high-profile vandalism cases during the 'Haqeeqi Azaadi' march, as reported by the Express Tribune.

Originating from Lahore to Islamabad, the May 2022 rally aimed to unseat the coalition government led by Shehbaz Sharif, which Khan has accused of ascending to power through a 'US-backed conspiracy.' The Islamabad police had lodged cases against 150 individuals, including Khan and other PTI leaders, over alleged arson and vandalism during the rally.
