US Bomber Drill Escalates Tensions on Korean Peninsula

The United States conducted its first precision-guided bombing drill in seven years over the Korean Peninsula using a B-1B bomber, alongside South Korean jets. This comes amid heightened tensions with North Korea due to recent provocations and balloon attacks. The drill aimed to reinforce US-South Korea defense collaboration.

The United States deployed a long-range B-1B bomber over the Korean Peninsula for the first precision-guided bombing drill with South Korea in seven years, the South Korean government confirmed on Wednesday.

The drill, viewed as a show of strength against North Korea, coincides with escalating tensions stemming from the North's recent launches of rubbish-laden balloons toward the South and other provocations. Advanced US and South Korean fighter jets participated alongside the B-1B aircraft, marking the second US bomber's temporary deployment over the peninsula this year. The event aimed to highlight the US's security commitment to South Korea and bolster joint defense efforts, South Korea's Defense Ministry stated.

During the exercise, the B-1B released Joint Direct Attack Munitions, escorted by South Korean jets— the first such drill since 2017. South Korean jets also carried out live-firing exercises to showcase their readiness to counter potential threats from North Korea, the ministry added. The JDAM bombs, capable of precision strikes, are part of the U.S. weaponry provided to Ukraine against Russia. North Korea, sensitive to such exercises, may respond with missile tests, perceiving these drills as threats to its leadership and military infrastructure.
