Security has been heightened in New Delhi for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, according to officials.
A multi-layer security arrangement, including five companies of paramilitary personnel, NSG commandos, and snipers, has been deployed around the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Drone cameras are in service to monitor the area closely.
'More than 2,500 police personnel, including five companies of paramilitary and Delhi Armed Police (DAP) jawans, have been deployed around the venue,' said a Delhi Police officer. 'We have implemented traffic movement restrictions, diversions, and installed barricades to maintain law and order.'
Narendra Modi is set to begin his historic third consecutive term as Prime Minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. The national capital is on high alert, with dignitaries from SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) nations invited to the ceremony.
'We have designated routes from their hotels to the venue and back. During this time, vehicle movement for the public will not be allowed. The public has already been informed about the diverted routes,' said the officer.
Top leaders from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, and Seychelles are expected to attend the ceremony. Hotels in the city, such as Leela, Taj, ITC Maurya, Claridges, and Oberoi, are under strict security cover.
Commandos from Delhi Police's SWAT and NSG have checked routes, and deployment has been completed for the event scheduled to start at 2 pm.
'We have deployed forces around the President's house and various strategic locations for the event,' another senior police officer stated.
Multiple meetings have been held by Delhi Police officials at the police headquarters and in the New Delhi district to ensure a robust security plan.
The event will feature a three-layered security system, with Delhi Police personnel forming the outer ring, followed by paramilitary personnel, and the internal security of the President's house making up the inner ring. Snipers and armed police are already stationed along the routes for the dignitaries, resembling the security setup for the G20 summit held last year.
