Newly elected Tura MP Saleng A Sangma has prioritized advocating for Khasi and Garo language inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and enforcing the Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya. The Congress leader recently resigned as an MLA from Gambegre, addressing his letter to Meghalaya Assembly Commissioner Secretary Andrew Simon.
Simon, also the opposition’s chief whip, remarked that Garo Hills voters chose Sangma after losing trust in the ruling NPP and its candidate, Agatha K Sangma. Saleng A Sangma triumphed over the three-time MP by a margin exceeding 1.55 lakh votes.
Sangma emphasized that, as an MP, he would tackle various issues, with top priorities being language recognition, Inner Line Permit implementation, and enhancements in health and education in Meghalaya. Responding to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's claims about religious minority support, Sangma dismissed them as political tactics driven by a 'mental disorder.'
