Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to make a significant diplomatic trip to New Zealand, Australia, and Malaysia starting Thursday, officials have confirmed.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Li's tour will run from June 13 to 20. Australia previously revealed that he would arrive in Adelaide on June 15 and depart from Perth on June 18. While the New Zealand and Malaysian governments have yet to finalize his itineraries, expectations are high for fruitful discussions.
In a show of improved relations, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Li will hold their annual leaders' meeting in Canberra. This visit follows Albanese’s trip to Beijing last November, where both nations agreed to reinstate crucial bilateral dialogues.
This visit will mark the first by a Chinese premier to Australia and New Zealand in seven years, and the first to Malaysia since 2015. With trade barriers that previously cost Australia billions now largely lifted, Albanese aims to address remaining issues like lifting restrictions on Australian lobsters and advocating for the release of imprisoned Australian democracy blogger, Yang Hengjuno.
New Zealand intends to focus on doubling its exports to China over the next decade and to balance its trade interests with its Western allies in the Five Eyes intelligence partnership, amidst growing regional tensions. Australia, meanwhile, has aligned more closely with the United States in countering China's influence.
