UN Security Council Backs US Proposal for Gaza Cease-fire: Will Hamas Agree?

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the global backing for a US-led cease-fire proposal in Gaza, highlighted by the UN Security Council's recent vote. Speaking in Tel Aviv after meeting Israeli officials, Blinken urged Hamas to respond to the initiative, which has gained significant international support.

During his eighth visit to the region since the conflict began on October 7, Blinken reinforced the need for a cease-fire, humanitarian aid, and postwar governance plans for Gaza. He is set to continue discussions in Jordan and Qatar, critical mediators in negotiations with Hamas.

The proposal, introduced by President Joe Biden, seeks to establish a phased cease-fire, hostage release, and humanitarian aid. Despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's reservations, Blinken stressed the importance of the plan to end hostilities and secure aid for Gaza's residents.
