In a significant announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Thursday that Jammu and Kashmir would soon witness assembly elections and efforts are underway to restore its statehood. The declaration elicited a spectrum of reactions across the Union Territory.
The Ghulam Nabi Azad-led Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and the Apni Party extended a warm welcome to the news, but the primary regional entities, including the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP), approached it with caution. The Congress dismissed the statement as being vague.
DPAP's chief spokesperson, Salman Nizami, remarked, “We welcome PM Modi Ji's statement on conducting elections and restoring statehood in Jammu and Kashmir.” He emphasized the people's eagerness for change, highlighted by their participation in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The announcement, while promising, also stressed the necessity for peace and smooth election execution to meet the citizens’ aspirations.
Further, Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari underscored the significance of Modi's announcement, recognizing the anticipation among people to regain their democratic rights. Conversely, NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq asserted that the Election Commission of India must adhere to the Supreme Court’s election timeline. Sadiq was supported by PDP's Suhail Bukhari, who voiced mistrust, noting that similar promises had been made for the past four years without fruition. The Congress's Ravinder Sharma critiqued Modi for being vague, raising issues about security, unemployment, and pending projects.
Prime Minister Modi’s address at the SKICC event 'Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K' praised the high voter turnout in recent Lok Sabha elections, envisioning it as a harbinger for forthcoming assembly polls. His assurance to see J&K regain statehood has ignited a wave of hope amidst skepticism.
