Rijiju Pushes for Consensus on Lok Sabha Speaker Selection

In a bid to ensure smooth parliamentary proceedings, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized the importance of consensus for selecting the new Lok Sabha Speaker, amid speculations of opposition Congress favoring a contest for the pivotal role.

Addressing media queries, Rijiju confirmed ongoing consultations with NDA partners to finalize their strategy. 'We will take steps very soon,' he stated, hinting at imminent discussions with opposition leaders.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha kicks off on June 24, with the much-anticipated Speaker election slated for June 26. Potential candidates from BJP, including D Purandeswari, Radha Mohan Singh, and Bhartruhari Mahtab, are reportedly in the fray, alongside a possibility of a second term for the incumbent Speaker, Om Birla.
