In the aftermath of a revolt by senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders against its chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, the party’s working committee has firmly reposed its faith in his leadership. On Wednesday, the committee urged 'detractors' to refrain from aiding the 'panth's enemies' and reaffirmed Badal’s position at the helm.
The dissenting leaders argue that after consecutive electoral defeats under Badal’s leadership, a change is imperative for the party’s revival. Senior members like Sikandar Singh Maluka and Prem Singh Chandumajra have announced plans to launch a 'SAD Bachao' movement next month, emphasizing the need for new leadership to steer the party away from its declining trajectory.
The faction led by Sikandar Singh Maluka cited the party’s dismal performance in recent elections, including the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, where SAD managed to win only one seat. The rebels have been labeled as 'frustrated elements sponsored by the BJP' by the party, a charge Maluka vehemently denies. He insists their sole agenda is to 'save and revive Akali Dal'.
