Veteran Odisha politician and former minister, Surendra Nath Naik, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 87, his family confirmed. Naik had been suffering from age-related ailments and died at his residence.

Naik's political career spanned several decades, during which he was elected to the Odisha Assembly seven times from the Kakatpur constituency. He served in multiple ministerial roles, including excise, revenue, agriculture, school and mass education, and panchayati raj, under the leadership of Biju Patnaik and Naveen Patnaik.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other senior leaders paid floral tributes to Naik in the state assembly, acknowledging the significant void left by his passing. In a tribute, Naveen Patnaik highlighted Naik's dedication and service to the people of Kakatpur, describing him as an able politician and humanitarian.
