Last Sunday's parliamentary election results in France brought much-needed relief to a diverse cross-section of the population. Many celebrated the outcome as a rejection of far-right xenophobic forces.
“It was a moment of joy, a light at the end of the tunnel,” Loven Bensimon said of the results, celebrating at Paris's Place de la Republique. Despite the relief, Bensimon and others acknowledge that the fight against everyday racism is far from over.
The National Rally, an anti-immigration party, came in third, thanks to centrists and leftists banding together. However, the campaign has resurfaced issues of racist hate speech and violence. Civil rights groups warn that these issues won't disappear with the new parliament.
