In a recent UN General Assembly vote, India abstained from a resolution demanding Russia immediately halt its aggression against Ukraine and withdraw all military and unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The resolution, adopted with 99 votes in favor, 9 against, and 60 abstentions, highlights significant international divisions on the Ukraine conflict.
The resolution, entitled 'Safety and security of nuclear facilities of Ukraine, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,' urges Russia to end its military presence and return the facility to Ukrainian control to ensure safety and security. It also calls for an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure.
Introduced by Ukraine and backed by over 50 nations, including France, Germany, and the US, the resolution also demands access for the International Atomic Energy Agency to monitor nuclear safety at the site. Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy criticized the document as politically motivated and non-consensual.
