In a scathing attack on the BJP, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday denounced the party's decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'—the day the Emergency was declared in 1975. She described it as part of the BJP's 'negative politics.'
Her remarks followed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement of the new observance, aimed at honoring those who suffered during the Emergency. Shah emphasized the 'massive contributions' of those who endured inhuman treatment during the period.
Gandhi reacted vehemently, asserting that only those who believe in the Constitution will protect it. She condemned the BJP for its alleged history of opposing and attacking the Constitution. The Congress has criticized the move as a 'headline-grabbing exercise in hypocrisy.' Meanwhile, BJP leadership defended the observance, stating it serves as a reminder of Congress' 'dictatorial mindset.'
In a counter move, the Congress announced June 4 as 'Modi Mukti Diwas,' referencing the date when Lok Sabha poll results fell short of giving BJP a majority. However, the BJP-led NDA secured a third term with 293 seats.
