In a stunning political upset, independent candidate Shankar Singh emerged victorious in the Rupauli assembly bypoll in Bihar, unseating former minister Bima Bharti in a tightly contested race.

The by-election was prompted by the resignation of the JD(U) MLA, who sought re-election on an RJD ticket. Bharti, a three-time winner for JD(U), failed to retain her seat on the RJD ticket, finishing third with an 18% vote share.

JD(U)'s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal led the race initially but ultimately fell behind as Singh surged, winning by a margin of 8,246 votes.
