The Republican National Convention, held every four years, began here on Monday under unprecedented security measures following a failed assassination attempt on presidential nominee Donald Trump.
The former US president narrowly escaped injury when a bullet grazed the upper part of his right ear during an election rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.
Trump will formally accept the nomination and deliver his speech at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on July 18. A day earlier, he is expected to announce his vice-presidential candidate.
Trump arrived in Milwaukee on Sunday evening and is not set to speak until Thursday night. His campaign and the convention's organizers confirmed they would proceed with the event to nominate him for the presidency.
More than 2,400 delegates from across the nation will gather to formally support Trump. This marks the third time Trump has been nominated as the Republican presidential candidate, following nominations in 2016 and 2020.
Given the increased security threats, thousands of personnel have been deployed at the convention venue. Much of downtown Milwaukee and the hotels housing the delegates have been cordoned off with restricted entry.
Organizers estimate that over 50,000 delegates, officials, guests, and media personnel from across the United States have arrived in Milwaukee for the event.
Local schoolchildren have prepared nearly 100,000 balloons for the convention's finale.
Additional security forces from various states have been brought in to support the event, including 61 law enforcement officers from California.
“Public safety transcends party lines. California is proud to support our Wisconsin colleagues during this important event,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.
The Secret Service assured no changes to their operational security plans despite the recent assassination attempt, with preparations in place for 18 months.
