In a significant and controversial move, the Pakistan government announced on Monday that it will ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, founded by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, citing alleged involvement in anti-state activities.
The announcement was made by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar during a press conference, where he detailed the government's reasoning based on multiple accusations including the May 9 riots, the cipher episode, and the foreign funding case. Tarar stated that the evidence is compelling enough to enforce the ban.
Additionally, the government plans to file treason charges against Khan and his senior party colleagues. This marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing political crisis, with Tarar accusing PTI of undermining Pakistan’s stability for its political gains. The move follows the Supreme Court’s recent decisions that provided relief to PTI and its leaders.
