In a controversial move, the Pakistan government announced its decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party for alleged participation in anti-state activities. The announcement has drawn a sharp response from the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, which described the action as 'desperation' and a 'sign of panic' within the federal administration.
PTI's reaction comes on the heels of the government's claim that the ban was based on Khan's involvement in numerous cases, including treason and electoral rigging. Currently imprisoned at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Khan faces over 200 cases, having been convicted in several. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Khan's political rivals, are major players in the current coalition government.
Senior PTI leader Senator Ali Zafar spoke out against the government's move, dubbing it illegal and vowing to fight it. Zafar pointed to a recent Supreme Court ruling in PTI's favor regarding reserved seats. The PTI also criticized information minister Attaullah Tarar for ignoring key questions about international observations, underlining a sense of governmental panic.
