Upping the ante against Imran Khan, the Pakistan government on Monday announced it has decided to ban his party, PTI, on charges including receiving illegal foreign funds, involvement in riots, and alleged anti-state activities that will lead to treason charges against the jailed former prime minister.
Announcing the unexpected move, Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, spotlighted the PTI's activities that supposedly weakened the nation's sovereignty and compromised its integrity on the international stage. Tarar stated, 'PTI and Pakistan cannot co-exist,' and emphasized that the matter would be escalated to the Cabinet and Supreme Court.
PTI reacted sharply, terming the move 'a sign of panic,' and criticized the federal government for allegedly fabricating cases without merit. Khan's party is being tried for multiple offenses, including the May 9 riots and involvement in anti-state activities, which the government claims justify the ban.
