Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator J.D. Vance to be his vice presidential running mate, as the Republican Party officially nominated the former president at the national convention in Milwaukee.

"J.D. will fight for our Constitution and stand with our Troops," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. The convention began shortly after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and enjoyed a legal win when a federal judge dismissed one of his criminal prosecutions.

The four-day event will culminate in Trump formally accepting the nomination, challenging Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. Vance, initially a Trump critic in 2016, has since become one of his most ardent supporters.

Appearing with his wife Usha, Vance was greeted warmly by delegates upon his formal nomination. Despite his popularity with Trump’s core supporters, it's uncertain if he can widen the ticket's appeal given his conservative stance on issues like abortion.

Biden has labeled Vance "a clone of Trump on the issues," and polls indicate a close race between Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, with Trump leading in multiple swing states.

The primary fundraising super PAC supporting Trump, MAGA Inc., announced it had raised over $50 million on the first day of the convention. In light of the assassination attempt, Trump stated he would revise his acceptance speech to focus on national unity.

This assassination attempt has dramatically shifted the dynamics of the campaign, which was previously focused on Biden's suitability given his age. Biden has condemned the violence and ordered a review of the incident.
