Former US president Donald Trump, sporting a bandage partially covering his right ear, made a dramatic return to the public eye at the Republican National Convention, following a recent assassination attempt.

The 78-year-old entered the hall to rapturous applause and held his fist high as thousands of delegates and supporters chanted 'fight' and 'USA'. The attempted assassination occurred over the weekend at a rally in Philadelphia, leaving Trump with an injured ear, one dead, and two seriously wounded.

The convention saw delegates from across the country elect Trump as the Republican presidential nominee, set to challenge incumbent Joe Biden in the November election. The Florida delegation, led by his son Eric Trump, provided the decisive support. His entire family joined him, including his new running mate, Senator JD Vance, who was introduced earlier in the day and met with thunderous applause.

Trump's acceptance speech will take place Thursday, as the nation watches an unprecedented political event unfold. Meanwhile, the Democratic party is preparing to formally nominate Biden at its convention in Chicago this August.
