A six-member Congress delegation, led by MP Gaurav Gogoi, met Tripura Governor N Indrasena Reddy on Thursday to express concern over violence in Gandatwisa, Dhalai district, and alleged attacks on party leaders during the panchayat elections.

Violence in Gandatwisa followed the death of a tribal youth injured in clashes between two groups, resulting in several homes being gutted. 'Today, the delegation met the governor at Raj Bhavan and apprised him of the violence in Gandatwisa. The party doesn't want a Manipur-like situation in Tripura,' Gogoi informed reporters.

Gogoi stressed that the Congress seeks justice for the deceased youth and those rendered homeless. Alleging a deterioration in the law and order situation in the northeastern state, Gogoi stated, 'The Constitution and democracy are in danger as people have lost their rights to contest elections.'

Echoing these concerns, Congress MP Tariq Anwar, part of the delegation, insisted, 'The fundamental right is being trampled in Tripura with opposition candidates struggling to file their nomination papers. We want the election to be free, fair, and peaceful.'

Anwar added that the party would submit a memorandum on the violence to the Governor on Friday, as requested. The delegation, initially set to visit Gandatwisa on Friday, canceled the plan after local administration denied permission, informed Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha.
