Union ministers Bhupender Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnaw convened a strategic meeting with Maharashtra BJP leaders on Thursday to evaluate party preparations for the upcoming assembly elections.
Yadav, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with Railway Minister Vaishnaw, are responsible for steering the party's campaign in Maharashtra. Key figures in the state BJP, including Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, attended the meeting, according to party sources.
Discussions centered around contesting 150 seats in the assembly elections. The two Union ministers are scheduled to continue their meetings in Mumbai on Friday. A significant convention in Pune on July 21 will feature Union minister Amit Shah, sources revealed.
After the meeting, former MP Raosaheb Danve informed reporters that seat-sharing talks would be conducted with leaders of the ruling alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena and the NCP.
Maharashtra's assembly elections are anticipated to take place in October. The BJP experienced a significant decline in the recent Lok Sabha elections, securing only nine seats, while their ally Shiv Sena and the NCP won seven and one seats respectively.
In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) notably won 30 out of the 48 seats. A report by 'Vivek', a Marathi weekly connected to the RSS, cited the BJP's alliance with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP as a critical factor in their poor performance.
According to the weekly, public sentiment turned against the BJP following their coalition with the NCP, leading to disappointing results in the parliamentary polls.
