Former Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra was appointed on Friday as India's ambassador to the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced his imminent assignment.
The ambassadorial post had been vacant since January following Taranjit Sandhu's retirement. Kwatra brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to the position, having served as foreign secretary from May 2022 to July 2024.
Kwatra's career in the Indian Foreign Service began in 1988. He has held significant roles in various international locations, including Geneva, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Beijing, Nepal, France, and most recently, Nepal. His new role is expected to strengthen India's diplomatic relations with the US.
