A Tunisian court sentenced opposition leader Lotfi Mraihi to eight months in prison for vote buying, according to his lawyer on Friday. Mraihi, leader of the Republican Union Party and a potential presidential candidate, has also been banned from running for office for life, said lawyer Omar Ismail.
The ruling comes as several opposition leaders accuse President Kais Saied's administration of using judicial pressure to silence rivals ahead of the 2024 elections. While Saied, elected in 2019, has not officially declared his candidacy, it is anticipated he will seek a second term.
Opposition parties argue that free and fair elections are unattainable without releasing imprisoned politicians and ensuring media independence. President Saied dissolved parliament in 2021, claiming it was necessary to tackle corruption, a move the opposition labeled a coup.
