Russia escalated military tensions on Sunday by scrambling MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter jets to intercept two U.S. B-52H long-range bomber aircraft near the Arctic's Barents Sea. The Russian defense ministry confirmed on Telegram that the bombers turned away before reaching Russia's state border.
Regular U.S. flights over international waters have recently met with more aggressive responses from Moscow. In June, Russia accused the U.S. of using reconnaissance drones over the Black Sea to aid Ukrainian strikes on Crimea. The Russian defense minister has even ordered preparations for responses to U.S. drone missions.
Past confrontations have marked this aerial chess game, such as the March 2023 incident where a Russian Su-27 damaged a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone, leading to its crash in the Black Sea, the first such clash since the Cold War. These incidents amplify the fraught atmosphere brought on by the ongoing Ukraine war.
