Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary on Sunday demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government revoke its directive requiring eateries along the Kanwar route to display the names of their owners.
Chaudhary emphasized that kanwariyas do not inquire about the religion of those providing services to them and argued that the matter should not be connected to any religion. The UP government extended this controversial order across the state after Muzaffarnagar Police initially imposed it on eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route.
The directive has faced backlash from opposition parties and even members of the ruling alliance, who perceive it as targeting Muslim traders. Speaking to reporters, Rajya Sabha member Chaudhary asserted, ''There is still time for a rollback, and the government should reconsider its stance.''
During an all-party meeting on Sunday, opposition parties agreed to escalate the issue to Parliament. Samajwadi Party's Ram Gopal Yadav accused the ruling BJP of communal divisiveness, while Congress leader K Suresh and AAP's Sanjay Singh also criticized the decision.
