Four newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs will take their oath in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday, announced Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay.
The House's 10-day session commenced on Monday but was adjourned after noting obituary references.
'As per convention and under Article 188 of the Constitution, the four newly elected members, who won in the recent by-elections, will be sworn in by me,' Bandyopadhyay informed reporters at his assembly chamber.
The swearing-in ceremony will occur before the House resumes at 1 pm on Tuesday, he added.
Resignations for Lok Sabha candidacies by sitting MLAs Krishna Kalyani, Biswajit Das, and Mukut Mani Adhikari necessitated the bypolls. Additionally, a by-election was required in Maniktala following the death of MLA Sadhan Pandey in 2022.
Kalyani, Adhikari, Sadhan Pandey's widow Supti Pandey, and Madhuparna Thakur were elected from Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, Maniktala, and Bagda seats, respectively, during the July 10 bypolls.
'We had written to the Speaker expressing our wish to be administered the oath in the assembly as per constitutional provisions and precedent,' Pandey told PTI.
Previously, the swearing-in of other TMC MLAs post-June 1 bypolls was uncertain due to a standoff between the TMC government and Raj Bhavan. Ultimately, the Speaker administered the oath.
