Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to become her party's nominee against Republican Donald Trump, according to an Associated Press survey. This comes in the aftermath of President Joe Biden's decision to drop his bid for reelection.
The quick consolidation behind Harris marks the party's attempt to put weeks of internal drama over Biden's political future behind them and unify against Trump with just over 100 days until Election Day. Prominent Democratic officials, party leaders, and organizations lined up behind Harris, leading her campaign to set a new 24-hour record for presidential donations on Monday.
By Monday night, Harris had garnered the support of at least 2,579 delegates, more than the 1,976 required to win on the first ballot, according to the AP tally. Various state delegations, including Texas and California, confirmed their support.
