German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lauded U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as a 'competent and experienced' leader during his summer news conference on Thursday. He noted her potential to win the upcoming U.S. election, while steering clear of a direct endorsement over Republican candidate Donald Trump.

'The election campaign in the USA will certainly be exciting, now with a slightly new line-up and a new constellation,' Scholz remarked. 'I think it is very possible that Kamala Harris will win the election, but the American voters will decide.'

Scholz had openly supported U.S. President Joe Biden before Biden's recent decision to bow out of the race and back Harris. The Chancellor sought to reassure that he would work with whomever wins the November election. He also confirmed his own re-election bid in Germany amid fluctuating poll ratings.
