Intensifying Conflict: Israeli Forces Press On in Gaza
Israeli forces advanced into eastern Khan Younis in Gaza, shortly after Prime Minister Netanyahu told U.S. lawmakers about efforts to rescue hostages. Recent clashes in the region have found the bodies of five Israelis killed and Gaza health officials report over 39,000 Palestinian deaths. Diplomatic ceasefire initiatives remain stalled.
Israeli forces intensified their military operations in eastern Khan Younis on Thursday, hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured U.S. lawmakers of his ongoing efforts to liberate hostages held by Hamas.
Over recent days, fighting has been concentrated in the towns of Bani Suaila, Al-Zanna, and Al-Karara, leading to the discovery of the bodies of five Israelis killed during Hamas' attack on October 7. This incursion saw more than 250 hostages taken and resulted in 1,200 Israeli fatalities. In retaliation, Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas, with the ensuing nine-month conflict resulting in over 39,000 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza health officials.
On Thursday, several Palestinians were injured during Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes, while an airstrike east of Khan Younis claimed four lives, Palestinian authorities reported. Israeli bombardment escalated in areas around Rafah, causing further casualties. The Israeli military claimed dozens of militants were killed and around 50 military structures dismantled during operations in Khan Younis, with continued activity in Rafah reportedly killing two more militants.
Netanyahu, in an address to the U.S. Congress, reaffirmed his government's commitment to securing the release of hostages, though his remarks drew stark criticism from Hamas and disappointment among displaced Palestinians. Local residents had hoped for an announcement of a ceasefire, but instead, Netanyahu reiterated his intent to continue the conflict.
Efforts led by Arab mediators and backed by the United States to negotiate a ceasefire appear stalled, with further talks expected next week. Meanwhile, an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza's Sheikh Radwan suburb resulted in four deaths, highlighting the continuing violence in the region.
