Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday criticized the central government, alleging an 'undeclared emergency' by detaining an elected MP under the National Security Act (NSA). The sharp rebuke came during a debate in Lok Sabha, with Channi highlighting the detention as an assault on democracy.

Channi avoided naming the MP but BJP leaders swiftly identified the individual as Amritpal Singh, a radical Sikh preacher. Channi's remarks triggered a vociferous response from BJP leaders. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla demanded that the Congress explain its stance on Khalistan, linking it to the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh and BJP MP Dinesh Sharma were among those calling for Channi's expulsion from Congress, accusing him of siding with anti-national elements. The Lok Sabha session witnessed adjournments following a heated exchange between Channi and BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu over the controversial remarks.
