Senior BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha member Prabhat Jha died on Friday in a hospital in Gurugram at the age of 67 after a prolonged illness, according to party leaders.
Jha, born in Bihar, began his career as a journalist in Gwalior before joining the BJP. He rose to become the president of BJP Madhya Pradesh in 2010 and served in the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh from 2008 to 2020. He was also the national vice president of BJP in 2015, and edited the party's mouthpiece Kamal Sandesh starting in 2006, gaining national attention for his editorials.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over Jha's demise, highlighting his contributions to public service, journalism, and the party's organization. Further condolences came from leaders including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and senior Congress leader KK Mishra. His last rites will be held in his ancestral village in Bihar on Saturday.
