Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Christians on Friday that if they vote for him this November, 'in four years, you don't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good, you're not gonna have to vote.'

It was unclear what the former president meant by his remarks during an election campaign where his Democratic opponents accuse him of being a threat to democracy. This comes after his attempt to overturn his 2020 defeat to President Joe Biden, leading to the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for clarification.

Speaking at an event organized by Turning Point Action in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump urged Christians to vote just this time, promising they wouldn't need to do so again. 'Four more years, it will be fixed,' he said, addressing his loyal evangelical supporters. In an earlier interview, Trump claimed he would act as a dictator 'only on day one' to secure the southern border and expand oil drilling.

Democrats have seized on these comments. Jason Singer, a spokesperson for Kamala Harris's campaign, described Trump's speech as 'bizarre' and 'backward looking'. The race has tightened following Biden's decision to end his reelection bid, with Harris becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee. Recent opinion polls show Trump's lead over Biden has largely evaporated.
