Nicolas Maduro has secured a third presidential term in Venezuela, winning 51% of the vote, the country's electoral authority announced. Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez garnered 44%, challenging exit polls that had suggested a clearer victory for Gonzalez.
Maduro celebrated his reelection as a win for peace and stability. He reiterated his claims about the transparency of Venezuela's electoral system. However, a poll by Edison Research had predicted Gonzalez winning 65% of the vote, while Maduro was expected to obtain just 31%.
With 80% of ballot boxes counted, National Electoral Council President Elvis Amoroso cited an "aggression" against the electoral data transmission system, which delayed results. The CNE has called for an investigation into what it described as "terrorist actions," as opposition leaders demand accountability and military support for the vote results.
