India Eyes Greater Engagement in Ukraine Amid Global Tensions
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell anticipates India will soon increase its engagement with Ukraine. This development comes as part of India's balanced approach amid its ongoing relations with Russia and aspirations to play a significant role on the global stage, particularly in relation to the United States.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell announced on Tuesday the imminent involvement of India in Ukraine-related matters. The statement came during a Senate hearing coinciding with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow.
Campbell expressed optimism, stating, "I think we're likely to hear news of India engaging more directly in Ukraine. I'm grateful for that. I think India wants to play a responsible role globally." While Western nations have sanctioned Moscow for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India and China remain significant trading partners with Russia.
Modi's visit to Moscow occurred amidst heightened tensions, including a Russian missile attack in Kyiv that resulted in international outrage. The U.S. State Department has expressed concerns over India's relationship with Russia, especially as it seeks closer ties with India to balance China’s rise.
Campbell emphasized the importance of U.S.-India relations, citing the large Indian diaspora and mutual aspirations for stronger bilateral ties. He noted, "India is also a great power with its own beliefs and interests. While they may never be a formal ally, our relationship can still be extraordinarily strong."
