Political Turmoil in Jharkhand Assembly: Suspension and Protests
  • Country:
  • India

In a dramatic turn of events, eighteen BJP MLAs in Jharkhand were suspended from the assembly on Thursday for causing disruptions. The suspension, carried out by Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, followed a protest against the eviction of opposition MLAs by marshals the previous day.

Leader of the Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri labeled the actions as a sign of 'dictatorship' in Jharkhand. Protests erupted as BJP legislators demanded Chief Minister Hemant Soren's resignation and raised issues concerning employment. Heated arguments and document tearing ensued, forcing Mahto to call for their removal.

Despite chaos, the Assembly continued its proceedings and passed a resolution opposing the amendment to the Coal Bearing Areas Act, arguing it infringes on landowners' rights and deprives the state of revenue. Outside, Bauri accused the government of undemocratic practices, promising a strong public response in the upcoming elections.
