The release includes Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan. This diplomatic effort underscores international alliances and Biden's commitment to bring detained Americans home.
President Joe Biden on Thursday announced the release of three American citizens and one green-card holder from Russian imprisonment, achieved through a prisoners' swap deal with Russian authorities.
Among those freed were Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former Marine Paul Whelan, and journalist Alsu Kurmashev. The swap deal, involving multiple countries, also secured the release of Germans and Russians held in captivity.
'The deal that secured their freedom was a diplomatic feat. Altogether, we've negotiated the release of 16 people from Russia. These individuals endured unimaginable suffering, and today, their ordeal is over,' Biden stated.
The president revealed that the released prisoners were flown to Turkey before heading home to their families. 'This is an incredible relief for all the family members gathered here,' he said.
Biden acknowledged the support from US allies such as Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, and Turkey in these complex negotiations. He emphasized the importance of international alliances in ensuring American safety.
'Our administration has brought home over 70 Americans wrongfully detained worldwide, but many families still await reunification with their loved ones. This remains my highest priority,' Biden emphasized.
'Today, we celebrate the return of Paul, Evan, Alsu, and Vladimir and stand with the families of those still detained. We will never stop working until all are brought home,' Biden concluded.
