Vice President Kamala Harris eulogized longtime US Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee as a “force of nature” during the concluding memorials for the late Democratic lawmaker.
Harris, taking a break from her presidential campaign, lauded Jackson Lee for her coalition-building prowess and legislative expertise. Harris humorously noted avoiding Jackson Lee in the hall due to her intensity.
Harris emphasized that Jackson Lee always demanded excellence from everyone, understanding the brevity of life and the magnitude of work to be done. Recalling a call made days before Jackson Lee's passing, Harris expressed gratitude for their friendship. “To honor her memory, let us continue to fight,” Harris urged.
Jackson Lee, who died on July 19 at age 74 after battling pancreatic cancer, was a prominent Black woman in Congress and instrumental in efforts to combat domestic violence and establish Juneteenth as a national holiday. Over 50 House members attended her funeral, with New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries calling her a “voice for the voiceless.” Former President Bill Clinton remembered her as a firm believer in equality.
The services, attended by hundreds, included President Joe Biden paying respects at Houston's City Hall. Attendees like Arva Howard and Calandrian Simpson Kemp praised Jackson Lee's dedication to solving community issues and advocating against gun violence.
Jackson Lee, who served Houston's district since 1995 and held prior roles in the city council, was renowned for her advocacy on social justice issues, including policing reform and reparations for descendants of enslaved people. Despite an unsuccessful mayoral bid last year, her legacy as a champion for women and minorities endures.
