The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has called for the resignation of West Bengal Jails Minister Akhil Giri following a controversy over video clips that show him threatening and verbally abusing a woman forest officer.

Speaking to reporters in Purba Medinipur district, Giri stated he would resign but refused to apologize. The MLA from Ramnagar was seen in videos warning forest ranger Manisha Sahu about reducing her tenure after she removed encroachments on forest department land near Tajpur beach.

TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen conveyed that the state president Subrata Bakshi instructed Giri to apologize and resign immediately. Giri expressed his intention to email his resignation and hand it personally to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Another TMC spokesperson, Jaiprakash Majumdar, noted that the party disapproves of such behavior and acknowledged that Giri's actions had tarnished the party's image, referencing a previous controversy involving Giri from 2022.
