Imran Khan Proposes Dialogue with Pakistan's Military Amid Ongoing Political Turmoil
Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, in jail on charges he deems fabricated, expressed a desire for positive relations with the military. He stated his openness to dialogue if transparent elections were held and cases against his supporters dropped. Khan's remarks highlight Pakistan's prolonged political instability and economic crisis.
Pakistan's jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, who blames the military for his ouster and 12-month imprisonment on what he calls trumped-up charges, stated on Sunday that it would be "foolish" not to have "excellent" relations with the army.
Ahead of Monday's anniversary of his jailing on multiple charges, Khan told Reuters that he held no grudges against the United States, which he has also accused of orchestrating his 2022 removal. "Given Pakistan's geographical position and the military's significant role in the private sector, it would be foolish not to foster such a relationship," Khan said.
Khan offered "conditional negotiations" with the military for "clean and transparent" elections and the dismissal of cases against his supporters. Pakistan's army and government have yet to comment on Khan's statements. Analysts note that Pakistan's political instability contributed to the country's economic crisis, leading to an IMF bailout last month. Despite his criticisms, Khan remains dedicated to engaging with the military to improve Pakistan's dire situation.
