Expressing concern over the situation in Bangladesh, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday emphasized that India cannot afford to ignore the developments, asserting that peace and progress in the neighboring country is in India's vital interests.

Amid massive protests that led to over 100 deaths, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned, with an interim government taking over. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman made this announcement on Monday in Dhaka.

Reacting to the developments, Tharoor stated, 'It is very worrying, with around 300 lives lost since July 1. Bangladesh, surrounded by India on three sides, has deep ties with us, and instability there affects us significantly.' He noted that recent elections in Bangladesh were controversial, with the principal opposition abstaining. Tharoor warned of potential adverse effects on India due to the new government's possibly less friendly stance and the likelihood of continued unrest and refugee influx. He concluded by stressing that India has a vested interest in ensuring peace, stability, and growth in Bangladesh.
