India is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Bangladesh, particularly concerning the treatment of minorities. The government is maintaining 'close and continuous' contact with the Indian community in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday.
Jaishankar informed both Houses of Parliament that Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought immediate approval to come to India amidst escalating violence and political unrest in her country. Hasina arrived in Delhi the previous evening, following her resignation after violent street protests over job quotas.
With approximately 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, Jaishankar reassured that the diplomatic missions are actively ensuring their safety. Additionally, India has instructed its border forces to remain exceptionally alert due to the complex, evolving situation. Reports indicate increased attacks on public infrastructure and minorities, adding to India's concerns.
