Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju has taken aim at the Opposition, accusing them of misleading Muslims on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Rijiju revealed that Muslim delegations approached him, alleging that mafia elements have seized control of Waqf Boards and underscored the need for amendments.

'They are misleading Muslims. Until last night, Muslim delegations came to me. Many MPs have informed me that mafia groups have overrun Waqf boards. Some MPs support the bill but can't voice it due to political pressures. I will not name anyone to protect their careers,' Rijiju stated.

The minister also noted the extensive, multi-layered consultations held country-wide since 2015. Meetings were conducted across various states and with multiple Waqf Board chairmen. Rijiju emphasized that the Sachar Committee's recommendations, particularly prioritizing women and children, are integral to the bill's amendments. He added that the bill, now named the 'United Waqf Act Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995' or 'UMEED,' may be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further discussion.
