The Congress on Thursday extended congratulations to Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus as he assumed leadership of Bangladesh's interim government. A swift restoration of peace and normalcy in the country is the need of the hour, said Rahul Gandhi.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, taking the mantle after Sheikh Hasina's abrupt resignation, was sworn in amidst a wave of protests that left Bangladesh in turmoil. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge conveyed his well wishes, emphasizing India's deep historical ties with Bangladesh and the importance of safeguarding its citizens, including minorities.
The 84-year-old Yunus took his oath of office in a ceremony at the presidential palace, 'Bangabhaban,' overseen by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. He will be supported by a 16-member council of advisers, which includes key organizers from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Md Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud.
