Leaders Urge Resumption of Gaza Cease-Fire Talks
The leaders of the US, Egypt, and Qatar have called for the resumption of Gaza cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas. The meeting is set for August 15 with few remaining disagreements to resolve. The negotiations aim to end a devastating 10-month war in Gaza and include a proposed detainee swap.
The leaders of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar have issued a joint demand for Israel and Hamas to return to stalled cease-fire talks regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The talks, which are critical for negotiating the cessation of hostilities and the release of hostages, are scheduled for next week.
In a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, it was confirmed that Israel will send a negotiation team on August 15 to finalize the details of the proposed framework agreement. The discussions will take place in either Doha, Qatar, or Cairo, Egypt, and are being mediated by U.S. President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Qatari Emir Tamim al-Thani.
According to a senior U.S. official, who spoke anonymously, there are still four or five key areas of disagreement that need resolution. Notable among these is the timing for the proposed swap of Palestinian detainees held by Israel and Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Despite the complexities, negotiators believe an agreement can be reached.
