External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the Maldives' crucial role in India's 'Neighbourhood First' vision as he embarked on a three-day visit to the archipelago.

The visit, aimed at resetting strained relations after pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, comes following Muizzu's demand for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel last year.

During the visit, Jaishankar is expected to engage in discussions with Maldivian leadership and review bilateral cooperation, emphasizing defense, security, and economic ties, and inaugurate significant development projects.
