Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont announced his return to Belgium on Friday, eluding arrest during a brief visit to Spain. 'I'm in Waterloo after extremely difficult days,' he posted on X, following his escape after addressing a rally of supporters in Spain.

Puigdemont's daring return and subsequent escape—reminiscent of a crime thriller—has incited backlash from opposition politicians and the judiciary. Catalan regional police commissioner Eduard Sallent revealed that officers allowed his rally to conclude before attempting an arrest, only for Puigdemont to slip away, disguised in a baseball cap, backed by supporters.

The failed arrest has prompted the Supreme Court to demand accountability from both the Mossos d'Esquadra and the national government. While the parliament pardoned those involved in the 2017 secession bid, Puigdemont still faces embezzlement charges, as the referendum costs were charged to the regional treasury. His escape has heightened political instability, with the Junts party threatening to withdraw support from the government unless amnesty is extended to Puigdemont.
