Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised alarms over the state's demographic changes, expressing concerns about falling Hindu-Muslim population balance.

Hoisting the Tri-Colour on Independence Day, Sarma noted that indigenous people are increasingly becoming a minority in 12-13 districts, sparking a defensive stance among them.

Sarma cited recent statistics showing the Muslim population at 41 per cent and declining Hindu populace at 57 per cent in 2021. This shift is causing apprehension about the future security of Assam's indigenous communities.

The Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of family planning norms across religious communities to restore balance. He also spoke against polygamy, warning that without strong governance, local populations feel continuously at risk.

Concluding his speech, Sarma vowed to protect the interests of Assam's indigenous people, asserting himself as a steadfast beacon of hope during these challenging times.
